Charles W. Slater, Jr, 95, of Enfield, CT, died peacefully on Thursday, August 8, 2019 with family near. He was born in Winsted, CT, to the late Charles and Bertha (Stenner) Slater. He leaves behind the very special bond, friendship, and faithful love of Roberta Dombroski, to whom he referred to as the love of his life. After graduation from Gilbert High School, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served proudly during WWII where he volunteered for the 101st Airborne Paratroopers. He was then sent to the ETO in time for the invasion of Europe. He jumped behind enemy lines on D-Day and was severely injured by enemy bayonet as he landed. He served in England, France, Luxenburg, Germany and Holland and ended in Bastone surrounded by enemy troops before Gen. Patton's 5th army arrived to aid and save them. He was honorably discharged in 1945 with a Purple Heart and Bronze Star. Upon returning home, he married the late Amelia (Swift) Slater, his loyal wife for 63 years. He worked at Monsanto in Springfield, MA for over 40 years. He leaves his two special daughters, Mary Kay Pijar and her husband, John (Jack) of Chicopee, MA, and Sharon J. Berthiaume and her husband, Thomas of Chicopee, MA. He also leaves six treasured grandchildren, John Pijar and his wife, Melissa of Manchester, Amy Brooks and her husband, William (Bill) of Gainsville, VA, James Pijar of Belchertown, MA, Nicholas Sellers and his wife, Martha of Herzogenaurach, Germany, Erica Kazalski, and Blair and Thomas Kohl, all of Chicopee, MA. He also leaves sixteen wonderful great-grandchildren, Kaitlyn (Brooks) Cobb, Conor, Christopher and Kensey Brooks, Alec and Ainsley Pijar, Asher and Griffin Pijar, Emily and Lauren Sellers, Colby, Nolan, Callie Ann Kazalski, and Brayden, Weston and Hudson Kohl. He was predeceased by his little angel great-granddaughter, Logan Mae Pijar. The joy in his life was in watching his family grow up and participating in all of the family activities. For several years he became a regular member of the Enfield Congregational Church where he gained added faith and joy in participating in Bible Studies and the many activities of the church. He especially loved being with and doing things with several members who became his best friends. They remained his faithful friends during his illness. Friends and family are invited to attend a wake on Sunday, August 18, 2019 from 4 - 7 pm at Leete-Stevens Enfield Chapels, 61 South Rd., Enfield, CT 06082. On Monday, August 19, 2019, at 11:00 am, there will be a memorial service at Enfield Congregation Church, 1295, Enfield St., Enfield, CT 06082, followed by a collation at the church after the service. Those who are able, are also invited to a procession that will gather at the church at 1:30 pm to a burial at the Massachusetts Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Agawam, MA, at 2 pm where military honors will be rendered.
