Obituary for Elizabeth "Betty" Ellis (McGuire)

Elizabeth Mary (McGuire) LEDDY Ellis passed away on Monday, August 26, 2019, at her home surrounded by and with the love and comfort of her family.

Betty “B”or Mrs. LEDDY as she was known to most was born April 1, 1930 in Hartford, the daughter of the late Natalie and Peter McGuire and was one of 6 children. She was predeceased by her daughter Patricia Blankfard, her husband Ronald Ellis, her fiancé Roger Small, sister, Peggy and brothers, Terry, Gary and Richard.

B lived most of her life and raised a family of 5 in Windsor Locks and once the homestead was sold after 46 years she lived with her son Jim for several years. In recent years she lived in Broad Brook with her daughter Sharon Hamilton and husband Gary. During her stay with both son and daughter she did her best to make sure they knew she wanted to be waited on and had no qualms about trying to be the boss. This led to much laughter and yes some frustration too.

Mom was caring, loving, opinionated, and liberal and had an amazing ability to make friends of all ages. She loved to say that she knew Sharon’s husband Gary before Sharon did. The Glendale home was always a gathering place for family and friends and she had no qualms about adding another plate or two for dinner, holiday celebrations were open to all and there were always blankets and pillows for a surprise sleepover. Mom was someone who listened, gave advice (whether you wanted it or not) and that extended to her kids, her friends and our friends as well. Many of our childhood and adult friends continue to be an integral part of her life to this day. Mom loved to cook in abundance, bake cakes, banana was a favorite and her brownies were the best and loved by all. Yay, Sharon learned how to make them! She often asked why we made so much food for the holidays, we said we learned from the best!

B was always ready for any and all road trips, a drive to Vermont, hanging at Hamonnasett under the pavilion, lunches out and Thursday night Cruise nights.Maine was the summer family vacation spot as children and B instilled the love of Maine in us and to this day we along with B spend summer vacations and winter get a ways in Maine. We always said YAY We’re in Maine on the bridge…… who will say it now? Our memories with mom on road trips are most precious. She loved happy hour at home, a restaurant or on the patio and was known (like Nana) to say its 5: oo o’clock somewhere.

B was proud of both her Irish and Lithuanian heritage. She volunteered and held offices at The Lithuanian Club in Windsor and The Senior Center in Windsor Locks. Additionally, she volunteered at The Network Against Domestic Abuse in her younger years.

B is survived by her children who loved her more than words can say Maureen Lee Leddy, Paul Steven Leddy and wife Joanne, James “Jim” Leddy, Sharon Hamilton and her husband Gary, son in law Patrick Blankfard, her brother Marty McGuire, and her special adopted daughter Gail Monat. In addition she is survived by the Small, Alvarez,Dougeneck and Budris families. B leaves her beloved grandchildren Shawn Thomas Leddy, Erin Beth Leddy, Ryan James Leddy, Justin Thomas Caruso and Brett Joseph Caruso and Jacob Monat. In addition, she leaves 7 great grandchildren, Caleb, Joseph, Alexis, Steven, McKenzie, Daniel and Gavin.Gavin is the only great grandchild in CT and his visit’s made B so happy in the last few months. She also leaves many nieces and nephews. We must mention her grand dogs, Lily,Lucia, and Nip and on most days you would find B with Lily in her lap, who would have thought?

Mom, thanks for raising us, loving us, giving us love, laughter and so many wonderful memories, you simply are the BEST MOM EVER! You will be missed beyond belief.
