Obituary for Lawrence R. Smith

Lawrence R. Smith, 72, of Suffield, passed away surrounded by family on Monday, August 5, 2019. He was born in Lowell, MA on May 24, 1947, the son of the late Edward and Catherine (Riley) Smith. He grew up in Lowell and moved to Suffield in 1998. After high school Larry joined the US Marine Corps and served 4 years. He then went to Rochester Institute of Technology to obtain his Civil Engineering degree. He joined the US Naval Reserve in 1981 and retired as a Captain in 2007. During his 29 years of service to our country, he was involved in the Vietnam War, the Bosnia Conflict, and Operation Iraqi Freedom. He served in the Pentagon for a time and traveled the world in service to his country. He worked for many years as a Civil Engineer for the City of New Haven before retiring. He was a proud Veteran, a loving husband and father, and a great friend to many. His passion was golf and he facilitated a Seabee Memorial Scholarship golf tournament for many years. Besides his wife Ellen Smith, he leaves 4 daughters, Cathleen Markowski and her husband Christopher of Feeding Hills, MA, Eileen Smith of Holyoke, MA, Maureen Smith of Harrison, NY and Angeline Driggers and her husband David of Rocky Hill; 2 grandchildren, Chris and Eladia; 3 siblings Terry Smith, Paula Beaulieu and Cathy Smith.
